We remind that after the meeting of World Roma Organization's delegation with the Minister of Justice, Nela Kuburovic, held on June 14th, 2018, a decision was given to the World Roma Organization on the visit to Roma prisoners in Serbian penitentiaries, and the topic of the meeting with Mr. Carevic was the purpose of these visits.
Namely, during the meeting a common opinion was come upon that it is of the utmost importance to make efforts in increasing the inclusion of Roma prisoners socially and economically after leaving the penitentiary centers. During the visit of the expert legal team of the World Roma Organization, the prisoners would be explained the opportunity to participate in educational programmes during their stay in penitentiary centers in order to gain vocation in various profiles, thus gaining the opportunity of employment and earning, which would be beneficial both for themselves and the society. Also, it would be an opportunity for an insight into the existence of other legal options for their early dismissal from the penitentiary centers.
The position of the World Roma Organization is that such a project is the first in the environment which shows and proves that the Republic of Serbia is seriously working on implementation of equal human rights, both for the majority and minority people, and that democracy and the rule of law are consistently enforced, even in a prison environment, regarding national minority, in this case the Roma.
All the details regarding the further engagement of the World Roma Organization regarding the legal assistance to prisoners of Roma nationality was agreed upon.
